A supermarket chain has revealed when it will be opening its express store in the city centre.

Construction work has been taking place on 88-89 High Street for several months in order to transform it into a new Tesco Express.

The supermarket giant is set to open up its newest store on Thursday (February 23) in the former Pound Shop - which closed a year after opening.

Previously, it was the home of music shop HMV until the company fell into administration and eventually closed down in 2020.

Earlier this week, onlookers spotted signs, shelves, and tills being put up inside the store.

Ryan Holt, Tesco Worcester store manager, said: "We are extremely excited to be opening our new Worcester High Street store and helping to serve the local community.

"We want to continue to offer great value to our customers with a wide product range and the benefits of Tesco Clubcard and Clubcard pricing to our customers.

"We have 16 new colleagues joining the team from the local area and we know that local knowledge and experience will be so important as we look to build connections and play our part in the community."

Tesco bosses hope the store opening will have a positive impact on the wider community of Worcester, through its programmes such as Tesco Community Grants and Community Food Connection.

The opening of the store has created several jobs in the area but the team is still looking to fill more vacancies.

And the store has also pledged to keep its prices competitive due to pressures on household budgets.

Over the last five years, the supermarket’s customers across the West Midlands have helped to raise over £7.4 million for more than 3800 local groups and good causes through its blue token voting scheme known as Tesco Community Grants.

On Saturday, February 18 people noticed shelves inside the supermarket looking bare but ready and the self-service tills had been installed.

The store will be open from 7am to 10pm seven days a week.

It will sell lottery tickets, food to go, and chilled wines and beer.

The sign also features a Costa Coffee and Evri parcel delivery logo.
