A NEW father who says he was violently attacked by a group of youths in Worcester city centre has called on police to do more to tackle violent crime.

Chris said he was left in physical and emotional pain after eight teenagers attacked him when he was going to buy baby milk.

He is sharing these photos of his injuries after a teenager was attacked by a gang of youths carrying a knife and an axe in Cripplegate Park.

He wants the police to act now on intimidating gangs.

Chris, who asked for his surname to remain anonymous, said: "First, youths want to stomp on someone in the street, and then they will carry weapons.

"It is a natural empowerment they get from getting away with it."

However, police said arrests had been made in connection to the assault, and enquiries into CCTV footage of the incident are underway.

Chris was left with bruises, cuts, and a large gash to the eyebrow after he said the gang kicked and punched him on the corner of St Swithin's Street and the High Street, outside Greggs.

His GP said he was "incredibly lucky" not to have been more seriously injured, and his injuries had to be treated by a plastic surgeon.

The father of two said he suffered a ten-day concussion that caused visual disturbances and flashing lights.

He said the worst thing about the assault was that it left him unable to comfort his four-week-old.

"Emotionally, that was the worst time.

"You want to pick your son up and comfort him, but you can't.

"It was heart-wrenching because when he would scream out, I would just cry in pain."

Chief Inspector Brian Gibbs said: “We understand the concerns that have been raised and would like to offer our assurances we are doing everything we can to target those suspected of being involved in anti-social behaviour and violent crime.

"Safer neighbourhood teams have carried out disruption activity in the area, and a dispersal order remains in place around The Foregate."

He added a number of young people had been referred to their Steer Clear programme, which sees officers work alongside those involved or could be involved in knife crime and offer alternative routes and support to individuals.
