A PLAN to put up an ‘obtrusive’ 5G tower in the middle of a busy estate has been turned down by the council.

The 15-metre pole would have been installed on the corner of Windermere Drive and Keswick Drive next to hundreds of homes in Warndon, Worcester.

The move was turned down by planners at Worcester City Council who said building the tall pole in an “extremely prominent location” in front of several houses would be “unsightly” for people and “clutter” the residential streets.

Council planners also said the 5G tower would look “incongruous” and be of “detriment to the area” and would not “integrate effectively.”

One resident in Windermere Drive who objected to the plan said: “The pole will be an eyesore in the street, totally out of place in a residential road.

“It will not be in keeping in the area.

“We believe there are better locations locally which could be explored rather than an easy option location that suits the company rather than the local residents.”

Some of the city council’s planning officers agreed with the objector who argued there were better alternative locations for the 5G tower and Worcester Civic Society suggested the nearby shops in Cranham Parade would be a better location for the 5G tower if it needed to be built.

CK Hutchison Networks, which wanted to install the 5G tower, argued that Warndon does not yet have full 5G coverage and the preferred location was a prime spot to be able to provide faster signal for the surrounding houses.

It said while other locations had been looked at, the corner of Windermere Drive and Keswick Drive was “the most appropriate in terms of providing the best signal whilst having the least impact on the character of the area.”

The firm had argued the opposite to council planners and said the mast would “assimilate well” and “not be detrimental” to the area.

CK Hutchinson is also planning to install a 19-metre 5G tower in front of Wentworth Court off Droitwich Road in Worcester and another tower on the corner of St Mary's Street and Sansome Walk in the Arboretum near to Worcester Crown Court.
