A HOMELESS man stood in the street obstructing city centre traffic and lay on the floor blocking the exit to Worcester Foregate Station.

Simon Kane was sentenced when he appeared in front of city magistrates.

Aziefna Adams, prosecuting, said the 53-year-old, of no fixed abode, was drunk and causing a nuisance in the city centre at 4pm on February 17 this year.

Miss Adams said Kane had been shouting at members of the public before he blocked the exit of the railway station by lying on the ground.

After finally moving away when asked by police, Kane headed towards The Cross, before walking in the road obstructing vehicles.

Kane banged on shop windows and was eventually arrested after punching a traffic lights crossing box.

Miss Adams said Kane's demeanour towards officers had switched at one point threatening to kill them, then being cooperative.

The prosecutor said Kane had 36 previous convictions for 61 offences, with his last offence in 2017.

Kane, who represented himself, admitted a charge of drunk and disorderly.

The defendant said: "It was a little bit of a blip, that night I had too much to drink."

When asked why, after a period of staff staying out of trouble, he had started to reoffend again, Kane replied: "I had been to two funerals at that time, my head wasn't right.

"I apologise for wasting police time."

Kane added although he was sleeping rough he was currently receiving help from various organisations who were arranging a room for him to live at.

Elaine Bell, chairman of the magistrates bench, told Kane he would be receiving a conditional discharge of 12 months.

The chairman said: "If you stay out of trouble for the next 12 months this offence will go away.

"But if you are brought back to court for another offence you will be sentenced accordingly."

Kane was ordered to pay £26 victim surcharge but due to his limited means magistrates ordered he pay no costs.

The case was heard at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday, (March 23).
