Schools from across Worcestershire took part in a 10 day event to mark British Science Week with pupils tasked with designing and constructing a bridge from craft materials.

RGS Worcester hosted its annual Science 'Eggstravaganza' to celebrate science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).

Pupils took part from RGS Springfield, RGS The Grange, and local schools Broadwas C of E Primary School, Broadheath Primary School, Alvechurch C of E Middle School, St Clements C of E Primary School, Grimley & Holt C of E Primary School, Hollymount Primary School, Honeywell Primary School, Claines C of E Primary School and Pitmaston Primary School.

The event, part of the RGS Worcester Outreach Programme, was led by Dr Howard Smith, head of chemistry, who welcomed 68 pupils and set the STEM-based challenge.

Pupils were tasked with designing and constructing a bridge capable of supporting a weight suspended from its centre, using only papercraft straws, paperclips, string, and card. The groups were split into teams and then given 15 minutes to design and an hour to build their bridges.

On both days the judges were impressed by the engineering creations and the event received positive feedback.

Broadwas Primary School were crowned as this years winners.

Speaking about the event, Headmaster of the RGS Worcester Family of Schools, John Pitt, said: "We are delighted to have hosted this year's Science 'Eggstravaganza.'

"It was fantastic to see pupils from nine local primary schools and from RGS Springfield and RGS The Grange, come together and engage with science in such a fun and interactive way.

"We are proud to have played our part in inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers."
