THE transformation of a former Wetherspoons pub into a new restaurant is still underway.

The former Postal Order in Foregate Street is being turned into a bar and grill after the pub chain closed the city branch for good in January.

Work was quick to begin following the closure of the pub but there is still no official opening date for the new restaurant.

On the front of the building, a large sign remains which reads 'opening soon', 'bar and grill' and 'under new management'. However, the sign does not show which company will run it.

Previously, a pile of large planks of wood could be seen through the windows, but these have now been boarded up.

The Postal Order was owned by Wetherspoons, which announced its 'last orders' on Sunday, January 8.

The following day workers had already moved in and a number of boxes full of items and pieces of wood were laid out on the pub floor.

Furniture for enjoying a tipple al fresco, including tables, chairs and plants, went from the pavement outside the pub.

Although there is speculation that an American diner could take the place of the pub, nothing has been confirmed yet.

The city pub went up for sale by Savills Estate agency in the summer of last year.

In 1997, the Postal Order first opened and has been part of the city for the past 25 years.

The Postal Order's name was inspired by its previous use as a post office dating from the 1880s.

By the 1940s, the historic building also housed the city’s telephone exchange.

The postal order closure led to many Worcester News readers sharing their sadness about the news.

One reader Linda Rowberry, said: "I shall miss this place and all the lovely friendly staff who l class as friends."
