A THEATRE has defended booking a controversial comedian who warns 'stay away if easily offended'.

Roy 'Chubby' Brown is set to return to Worcester's Huntingdon Hall tonight and tomorrow.

He previously performed in the city in March 2022 despite dates cancelled in places like Sheffield and Lancaster due to the outspoken nature of his content.

The news has had a mixed reaction with some people excited to see him perform while others have aired their opinions on the controversial comedian.

But bosses from Huntingdon Hall have defended their decision to bring the comedian back.

The team said they try to cater to the audience's preferences but they know the show will not be to everyone's taste.

A spokesperson from the theatre said: "Our purpose as a venue is to provide a wide variety of events for our audiences to enjoy.

"We have patrons visit from all across Worcestershire, and further afield, from a wide range of backgrounds.

"Though not everything we programme will be to everyone’s taste, it’s our job to make sure we cater to all our audience’s preferences.

"Roy Chubby Brown has performed at Huntingdon Hall on many occasions and has a committed and supportive local audience that is happy to see him return.

"Sales for both performances keep pouring in and we look forward to welcoming Roy Chubby Brown to Huntingdon Hall once again."

Readers have had a mixed response to news of Roy Chubby Brown's appearance in the city.

And Caroline Bennett commented: "I saw him at the Northwick in Worcester in 1992 I think he's so so funny!!"

Others defended his right to perform - despite not enjoying his comedy.

Paul Burton said: "I won’t be going (not my cup of tea) but I would protect his right to perform, the right of the venue to stage it and the right of anyone that wished to see him!!!!"

A third commenter said he thinks Roy is great, but also totally sexist.

Steve Monte Pearsall commented: "Roy is great. Totally sexist and let’s be honest. He does have the habit of saying things we were too scared to say!"

Another fan Jenny Watkins said: "Saw him years ago, made me laugh, and in this day and age and with all that's going on, a bloody laugh is what we all need.

"If he’s not your cup of tea, don’t go.

"As the old saying goes, laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone"

Another commenter, Jim Bass said: "Easily offended? That’s 95% of the current population then, it’s a favourite pastime in the modern age."

Christian Hoare warned the easily offended to give the show a miss: "Saw him some years ago now at the Northwick, a most entertaining evening, the easily offended should give it a wide berth, or go and be offended."
