WORCESTER is preparing to mark the King’s Coronation in style, with a packed weekend of celebrations.

City streets will be adorned with bunting and flags as communities gather to mark the occasion with picnics and street parties.

The coronation will be shown live on a big screen in Cathedral Square between 10am and 3.30pm on Saturday, May 6, with guests reminded to bring their own chairs.

The Guildhall, which will be lit up red, white and blue, will also be showing the coronation on a big screen in the Lower Hall from 10am, with people welcome to bring food and drinks.

Anyone looking to get in the royal spirit ahead of the big day can purchase souvenirs such as mugs, tea towels, and flags from Worcester Tourist Information Centre, which will open on Coronation Day and Bank Holiday Monday from 10am to 4pm.

Also on Saturday, between 9am and 5pm, Cotswold Markets will hold their monthly food and craft market on High Street.

Elsewhere, more than 20 street parties are being held over the weekend with the village of Claines planning to host its own celebration at the recreation ground in Cornmeadow Lane.

The Claines Community Coronation Celebration, from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday, will include a fancy dress parade, live music, street food, a bar, and games and activities for children.

Sunday will also see Coronation Big Lunches staged at venues across the country, with the mayor of Worcester, Adrian Gregson, set to host one at the Guildhall at midday.

Around 100 guests from local charities and volunteering groups have been invited to the buffet, where tables will be hosted by around 20 civic guests, including the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire.

All invitees will be presented with a gift from the mayor.

Later in the day, at 4pm, a special evensong service will take place at Worcester Cathedral with councillors, former mayors and alderman joining the procession that will make its way from Guildhall.

The mayor of Worcester, councillor Gregson, said: “We are all set for a right royal celebration here in Worcester as we mark the Coronation of King Charles III and I hope everyone enjoys their street parties and the other festivities taking place.

“I’m particularly looking forward to hosting our Coronation Big Lunch and meeting so many residents who go above and beyond to help others in our city.”
