A motorist has avoided a driving ban because of the impact it would have on his mental health.

Keith Morris was caught speeding on the northbound M5 in Worcestershire on August 7 last year.

The 40-year-old appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on April 19 and admitted breaking the 60mph speed limit in his Volkswagen vehicle between junctions 5 and 4A.

Morris, of The Ropewalk, Neath, West Glamorgan, was fined £40 and had three points put on his licence.

He was also told to pay a surcharge of £16 and costs of £110.

But magistrates decided not to enforce a totting up disqualification because of the impact it would have on Morris’s mental health.

They said losing his licence would have a big impact on Morris and his job prospects because a back injury means he has difficulties travelling on public transport, as well as “the responsibility you have towards your son.”

Morris also admitted committing a second speeding offence on the same day, between junctions 7 and 6 of the M5, but magistrates imposed no separate penalty.
