A CALLOUS vandal has 'beheaded' knitted royal figures on a postbox topper loved by school children.

Julia Edwards had created the special King's Coronation topper on Northwick Road but was devastated to find a vandal had cut the heads off the King, Queen Consort and royal guard figures.

She makes special toppers on several postboxes in the area which delight residents and children making their way to Northwick Manor Primary School.

A walker discovered the damage with the heads left strewn on the road and cans of alcohol left nearby.

The heads were collected and they have now fixed them back onto the topper.

Yarnbomber Julia Edwards said it takes her at least a week or two to create the postbox toppers.

She said: "I found out about the vandalism on Facebook, although I did have a phone call from a friend and a message from a child I used to look after telling me there had been some damage.

"A bit of damage wasn’t unusual, sometimes children are allowed to pull and tug at the toppers, but the photos of this really purposeful destruction were devastating and the final straw to doing this all single-handed.

Worcester News:

"In the past, I have had two toppers stolen - one Christmas nativity scene and a Halloween topper.

"Most sets of toppers end up with some damage, but it’s generally from smaller children pulling and tugging to try to get figures off.

"I’d say I was saddened that they felt the need to do this, and I still don’t really understand why anyone would."

Before the Coronation topper, the Northwick Road post box had a Fantastic Mr Fox-themed topper for World Book Day.

Yarn bombing is a type of street art where people create colourful designs and leave them in public places, such as on bollards or fences.

The Northwick Road yarn bombing creation appeared along with another coronation-themed one outside Fernhill Heath Post Box.

However, mystery still surrounds the identity of the yarnbomber or bombers within the area.

Alan Kasch, owner of Fernhill Heath Post Office, said: "They like to remain secret and unknown to who they are.

"It is like a secret society, the Yarn Bombers."
