DESPERATE efforts by police officers to rescue a woman from a car submerged in a flooded ford has been released.

Officers formed a human chain to pull the woman from here white Mini which was almost completely submerged in Walcot Lane ford between Pershore and Drakes Broughton

Thanks to the Worcester officers' actions the woman was successfully rescued and escaped without serious injuries.

Video footage shows officers linking arms before one smashes the window and pulls the driver to safety.

Officers received a frantic 999 call from the driver, who is in her 40s, and found she was already 10 metres downstream and submerged underwater.

Chief Inspector Brian Gibbs said Tuesday's rescue is a "stark reminder of how water can be".

He said: "Unfortunately the woman found herself in difficulty in the ford and we’re really pleased officers were able to act so swiftly and rescue her before the vehicle sank too far under the water.

"Thankfully she wasn’t injured during the incident.

“This is however a stark reminder of how dangerous the water can be and we would always urge motorists to take care and avoid driving through large pools of water.

"I am immensely proud of the work of our team, they all acted in the finest traditions of policing acting quickly and instinctively working together as a team to rescue the lady.”

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service was also called to Walcot Lane Ford, near Pershore, at just before 8am.

A spokesperson said: “Water rescue vehicles from Worcester and Evesham Fire Stations were sent out along with water first responders from Malvern, the drone from Ledbury and Radar, our Urban Search and Rescue dog.

“On HWFRS' arrival, a woman in her 40s had already been rescued by the police from her car which was stuck in the ford.

“The woman was left in the care of the ambulance service with the police arranging vehicle recovery and closing the road on either side of the Ford.

“The incident status was changed to pending closure for HWFRS at 8.58am.”
