SAINSBURY'S have issued a statement after a serious incident forced the supermarket to close.

Sainsbury's Blackpole was closed after an incident which resulted in an arrest made on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) following calls to police at 3pm.

A security guard was injured during the incident and was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “Customer and colleague safety is our highest priority.

"Our Blackpole store has been open as usual since this morning and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Police first responded to calls at a pub on Blackpole Road where someone was threatened.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "Specialist police assets responded to the Blackpole Inn in Blackpole Road where a customer had been threatened with a bladed weapon but not injured.

"Further calls were received from the nearby Sainsbury’s Garage reporting a security guard had suffered an injury.

"Officers responded swiftly and detained a male nearby on suspicion of attempted murder. The injured man was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

"Enquiries are continuing and the public can expect to see an increase in police presence as we conduct our investigation but we can confirm that there is no ongoing risk to the public."
