A WARNING has been issued to people thinking of swimming at a Malvern beauty spot where several people have drowned.

As temperatures begin to rise, police officers are patrolling Gullet Quarry in Malvern to warn swimmers.

They have been asking people to adhere to the signs around the quarry and to also avoid having barbecues at the beauty spot.

People are being warned of the risk of death from drowning, falling rocks and submerged objects in the quarry.

"Please Stay Safe, enjoy the area and adhere to the signs around Gullet Quarry."

In recent years, measures to ban people from the site and increased patrols have all been tried, with people regularly seen swimming in the quarry during spells of hot weather.

Police patrols at Gullet Quarry saw 51 swimmers moved on from the site in the summer of 2020.

Previously, photographs revealed dozens of people at Gullet Quarry congregating near the water, which is forbidden under Malvern Hills Trust bylaws.

The notorious beauty spot claimed the lives of Justas Juzenas, aged 22, of Ross-on-Wye and Russell O’Neill, aged 17, of Worcester, who both drowned there in July 2013 within a week of each other.

The risk of cold water shock and drowning, hidden currents and unseen objects such as broken glass have been well-publicised by the Malvern Hills Trust, West Mercia Police, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Royal Life Saving Society UK.
