A scheme to keep libraries open for longer hours has been a success in two Worcestershire towns, according to the county council.

But a petition against plans to extend the scheme to St John’s now has more than 700 signatures.

Since Libraries Unlocked was launched in Droitwich and Stourport Libraries in June 2022, opening hours have increased by 85% - but the libraries aren't always staffed.

Customers who have upgraded to free Libraries Unlocked membership can now visit the library between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Saturday, including previously closed days.

Library staff are still available at times throughout the week to provide support.

Worcestershire County Council says feedback from customers shows the service is particularly popular with working people and working parents, people who prefer to use the library at quieter times and people looking to spend longer periods of time in the library.

Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member for communities, said: “Libraries are at the heart of our communities across Worcestershire, and I am thrilled to witness the incredible response to Libraries Unlocked in Droitwich and Stourport.

“The overwhelming participation and engagement by our valued community members have reaffirmed the importance of providing accessible and flexible library services.

“Libraries Unlocked has truly unlocked the potential of our libraries to serve as vibrant hubs for learning, connection, and community development.”

A year into the project, 68% of active library members at Stourport Library and 52% at Droitwich Library have signed up to Libraries Unlocked.

Upgrading to a Libraries Unlocked membership is necessary if you want to use library services during unstaffed hours.

The council said there have been 13,599 library visits, 17,314 issues, and 3,608 computer sessions across the two libraries in the past year.

Anyone wishing to upgrade to Libraries Unlocked membership will need to complete an induction, which can be organised by visiting the library in person or by calling 01905 822722.

The council is planning to make St John’s Library part of the Libraries Unlocked scheme in the autumn but councillors and residents have said they are against the idea.
