A GANG have caused safety fears by moving roadwork traffic cones and barriers along a busy road at night.

Neighbours could only watch on as the group caused havoc on the A38 Main Road in Kempsey at about 4am on Sunday (July 2).

One neighbour, who managed to film the group, said the men appeared to be throwing the cones and barriers into the road.

They said: "I’m a resident living in the development at the south end of the village - known as the Taylor Wimpey site.

"I was woken up by the noise of the group shouting and cheering and the banging of the cones and barriers as they were thrown into the middle of the road.

"This led to drivers having to stop their cars to clear the blockage before they could continue past."

Barriers and cones were in place for pavement and road alterations for the Taylor Wimpey development between Pixham Ferry Lane and Byefields.

Cllr Martin Allen, Worcestershire County Councillor for Kempsey, said incidents like this are not uncommon for the area.

He said: "We are aware of a few problems in Kempsey that have been highlighted lately, much of which seems to be this low-level, mindless anti-social behaviour.

"Police just do not seem to want to get involved which is more than unfortunate. If you leave incidents like this for too long, they escalate.”

West Mercia Police initially declined to comment on the incident as it was not reported to them - but Chief Inspector Brian Gibbs said he was disappointed to hear Cllr Allen's comments.

Chief Inspector Gibbs said: “I am disappointed to hear Councillor Allen’s comments as my team do a huge amount of work to both prevent and tackle anti-social behaviour in the communities we serve.

“I would encourage anyone who witnesses anti-social behaviour to report it to us via their local Safer Neighbourhood Team or the force website so that the appropriate action can be taken.”
