A Worcester mum and teacher who has written a children’s book will be reading it in the city’s newest bookshop.

Bonnie Morris, from St John’s, had her first book Starting School published in May.

It is designed to help children who are worried about starting school for the first time.

Ms Morris will be reading the book and signing copies in Script Haven, a bookshop and cafe that opened earlier this month in the former House of Coffee in Cathedral Square.

The event, dubbed ‘Storytime Sunday’, will take place on Sunday, September 3 at 11am.

“In preparation for children starting back to school I am reading my book, answering any questions about starting school and of course will do a book signing for anyone who would like a copy,” said Ms Morris, who is assistant head teacher at Rednal Hill Infant School, near Bromsgrove.

She previously told the Worcester News was inspired to write the book after being unable to find “a great book to help children settle into their new class” when starting school for the first time.

“I couldn’t find anything that truly reflected the 'ups' and 'downs' of those first few days of being in a classroom, so decided to write my own.

“It lets your little one know there will be happy and less happy moments, and that is ok.

“This book can be shared with children in a classroom or with little ones at home. Children can see the illustrations whilst the book is read with rhyme and repetition for them to join in.”

Script Haven became Worcester’s second independent bookshop when it opened on Saturday, August 5.

Opened by former Worcestershire Poet Laureate Leena Batchelor, the shop promises to offer a platform to authors and artists, and to act as a community hub.

It is also a cafe selling cakes and coffees, a gift shop and a second-hand book exchange.
