A PLAN to build 80 new homes in a village has already been with a wave of objections from residents.

Binocular Land has submitted a planning application asking for permission to build 80 homes on fields off Old Malvern Road between Powick and Collett’s Green near Worcester.

A number of objections have already been made by villagers in Powick who said there was already a lack of shops and the primary school would not be able to cope with the extra people.

One objector, Tabitha Barker of Fieldview Drive in Powick, said: “The village is totally lacking in any infrastructure to support any more homes. We have no shop, no doctors and the traffic is horrendous.

“This cannot be allowed to happen.”

And another objector, Anne Martinus of Essex Close, said: “This road and adjacent area is already heavily trafficked, especially during the school run and rush hour. This particular, narrow road, is used as a "rat-run" and, I fear, adding a housing estate will have a detrimental effect to the already heavily used area.

“Also can the only primary school in Powick support even more children?”

The homes would be built on nearly ten acres of fields on the edge of Powick next to the village’s primary school, parish hall and playing field if the plan is approved by Malvern Hills District Council.

The new estate would be made up of a mix of one-bed apartments, two-to-four-bed homes and several two-bed bungalows – including a number of ‘affordable’ homes.

Residents still have three weeks to give their views on the new 80-home plan but it has yet to receive any positive reactions.

In an objection, Melanie Wright of Berry Close in Powick, said: “80 homes on that small patch of land doesn't feel like it would benefit anyone. Yet again there is no infrastructure for all those additional people in Powick.

“Old Malvern Road is barely more than a lane for that amount of extra cars impacting the environment and surrounding houses.”

Sophy Parsons of Tannery Drive: “The school will be under too much pressure with such a large volume of houses, not to mention the road running through Powick and the lack of local shop.”

Part of the fields have been put forward as a potential site for around 25 new homes in the ongoing review of the South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDP) – the key planning document that sets out where thousands of new homes will be built in the next two decades, which still has not yet been approved after years of delays.
