A "TRAIL of devastation usually follows" warns a county councillor as gas works starts in a city suburb - again.

Residents are preparing for the worst as Cadent Gas roadworks on Cornmeadow Lane in Claines begin today (Monday) and are set to run until Wednesday (September 6).

Temporary traffic lights will be in the area which are expected to cause delays - after the area was affected by work in June.

Cllr Mel Allcott, Worcestershire County Councillor for Claines division and Worcester City Councillor for Claines ward, said people had been raising concerns after the previous roadworks caused issues for residents.

She said: "I would say that residents will be concerned with the news of the latest work needed to be undertaken by Cadent.

"Usually when there is Cadent Gas work taking place it is usually followed by a trail of devastation.

"I am hoping it will all be sorted smoothly."

Cadent Gas has been contacted for a comment but has not responded to our request.

Claines Church, on Claines Lane, warned its Facebook followers of the roadworks and also expressed concern.

A spokesperson said: "Members of all classes at the Parish Hall. There will be gas works ongoing from September 4 to September 6 at the junction with The Grove (the road opposite the Parish Hall) and Cornmeadow Lane.

"Three-way traffic lights will be in place. It is therefore debatable as to whether we can get onto the hall car park during this time. Once again disruption in the area."

In June, Cllr Allcott called for an internal investigation into Cadent Gas on the work it was carrying out in Claines after many residents in the area voiced their frustration and anger towards the company that has been changing all the old gas pipes.

In response, Cadent Gas said it understood residents' frustrations and said it would work with them and the local authority to see how it can provide better support.
