THE case of a 21-year-old accused of possessing an explosive substance took a dramatic turn as magistrates blasted delays in the case.

It also emerged Kristopher Bloomfield, of Bockleton, Tenbury Wells, has been charged with having knives at Birmingham Airport during the latest hearing of his case at Worcester Magistrates Court.

We previously reported Bloomfield faces four charges - possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate, possession of an explosive substance for unlawful purposes and two charges of possession of an offensive weapon in a private place.

The offences are said by the prosecution to have taken place in Bockleton, Tenbury Wells, on August 15 this year.

The weapons Bloomfield is alleged to have had in the offensive weapon charges are butterfly knives and a credit card knife.

The particulars of the ammunition charge mention the alleged possession of assault rifle ammunition, while the explosive substance charge lists "smoke grenade, training grenade, simulation battle sound units and SFRD fusion flash grenade".

It has now emerged Bloomfield faces another charge of possession of an offensive weapon.

The prosecution alleges Bloomfield had a lock knife and combat knife on him at Birmingham Airport on August 14.

There have been delays in the case due to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) needing permission from the Attorney General to proceed with the explosive substance charge.

Mark Hambling, prosecuting during the latest hearing on Thursday, (September 7), explained the matter was now in the hands of the Attorney General but approval had still not been obtained.

Mazar Iqbal, defending, highlighted it was the fourth hearing of the case and there was still little progress.

"This is four weeks on and we are in exactly the same boat as on the last occasion," he said.

Mr Hambling asked for a further week's adjournment but Mr Iqbal requested for progress to be made.

Magistrates then left Courtroom 1 for lengthy deliberations.

On returning Jayne Burton, chairperson of the magistrates bench, announced they have decided to tie the case with the other matter of the alleged knife possession to be heard at Coventry Magistrates Court next Wednesday, (September 13).

The chairperson said it would help tidy up the case while also give the CPS further time they required.

But the chairperson added: "We want to record we are not very happy with the way this has been dragged out."

The chairman told Bloomfield - who is remanded in custody and appeared via videolink to a packed courtroom including a public gallery full of supporters - he would appear by videolink again during the next hearing.
