A Worcester fire team has been revealed to be one of the best on the planet after competing in a global competition.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service’s Road Traffic Collision Extrication (RTC) team came fourth at the World Rescue Organisation (WRO) Extrication Challenge in Lanzarote last month.

The competition aims to boost RTC extrication techniques and foster development in trauma-related skills among firefighters, thereby increasing their success rate in handling casualty-centred incidents.

36 teams tackled lifesaving scenarios, technical complexities and unique command challenges, reflecting a complete range of road traffic collisions.

The grading was based on the difficulty of extrication, the vehicles concerned, and the gravity of patient injuries.

The six-person team, including Jayne Collins, Pat Murphy, Adam Holder, Dan Gray, Shaun Moser, and Adrian Phillips, rescued all six pretend casualties within the time limits with injuries such as a trapped pregnant mother, a dreadful haemorrhage and a flail chest victim in the mix.

Most of the team members initially started their fire service careers at Ross-on-Wye Fire Station before going on to spread out to other posts and departments.

Among the international competitors, the Hereford & Worcester team was high up the league table, achieving constant praise during the competition.

Their stand-out performance, however, was in the medical category, where they snatched the second-best spot in the world.
