A debt advice charity is urging residents facing money issues to access free a government advice service.

The newly established ‘Breathing Space’ programme has been used by a reported 158 residents in Worcester since its roll-out in May 2021.

The scheme provides a 60-day reprieve from additional interest, charges and creditor actions, while individuals seek expert advice and formulate a debt management plan.

National Debtline, one of the free debt advice charities authorised to register eligible candidates for the initiative, is encouraging people to seek advice to mark 'Talk Money Week' as the cost of living crisis continues.

The charity has delivered assistance to 99 Worcester residents facing debt challenges in the last year, which includes the new Breathing Space scheme.

As the living cost crisis escalates, National Debtline urges residents facing finance related anxiety to reach out to their debt advisers.

National Debtline claims consultation with these debt advisers yields tangible, positive results, with the service reporting that nine out of ten callers experience debt reduction or stabilisation.

It also says seven in ten clients mark a discernible improvement in their emotional and mental well-being.

David Cheadle, acting chief executive of National Debtline's parent charity, the Money Advice Trust, expressed his concerns regarding the ongoing financial hardship.

Mr Cheadle said: "The cost of living crisis has had a huge impact on household finances and people in Worcester and right across the West Midlands are struggling to cope.

"In the last 12 months alone, National Debtline advisers helped 99 people in Worcester through our free phone service – including registering people who are eligible for the government’s new Breathing Space scheme."

He further encouraged struggling individuals to utilise available support services, stating: "I would urge anyone in and around Worcester who is worried about their finances to contact our advisers at National Debtline, who can give you the advice and support you need."

Mr Cheadle also emphasised that advice could open a path to debt schemes like ‘Breathing Space’, and therefore advised any worried residents to contact National Debtline via phone-call at 0808 808 4000 or access advice online at www.nationaldebtline.org.
