A SCHOOL is celebrating a recent 'good' Ofsted score after being formerly placed in special measures.

Witton Middle School, in Droitwich, have been rated as 'good' in every category following the insection earlier this term.

The two-day graded inspection examined in the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes of the pupils, opportunities for personal development and leadership and management of the Droitwich school.

The report said leaders have worked effectively to transform the provision at the school and there are high expectations for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

The pupils were said to believe that belonging, collaboration, curiosity and growth enable them to develop both as learners and as individuals, and seem to be happy and enjoy going to school.

Suzie Bourne, headteacher of Witton Middle School, said: "This is a superb result for the entire school community.

"We have worked tirelessly to completely overhaul the curriculum and raise expectations and standards throughout the school.

"We have been fortunate to be part of a supportive Trust, and benefit from excellent links with other high performing middle schools across Worcestershire.

"It is wonderful for the staff team, and our fabulous pupils, to receive the recognition that they deserve.

"We have navigated some challenges along the way, but Witton has definitely seen a huge amount of positive change.

"Our most recent SATs results in the summer were the strongest ever achieved at Witton, which illustrates that our climate and approach to teaching are enabling children to succeed fully."

An area that was highlighted for improvement by the report was phonics teaching, which the report said was not always focused as closely as it could be on practising and revising the sounds being taught.

The report said that this means that the progress made by a small number of pupils is not as rapid as it might otherwise be.

Witton Middle School was placed in special measures by Ofsted in 2020, and subsequently became a brokered Academy, joining the Spire C of E Learning Trust.

The school has over 400 pupils between the ages of nine and 12 years old.
