A Worcester postmaster said customers have been quick to show their support after watching a TV drama about the Post Office Horizon scandal.

And Worcester MP Robin Walker says it is important justice is done - and seen to be done.

St John’s postmaster Colin Fitzgerald is aware there has been talk of people boycotting post offices after watching Mr Bates vs The Post Office on ITV.

But he said his customers “understand that would be counter-productive” and “have generally been very supportive”.

Mr Fitzgerald has been following the scandal since he and wife Ann took over St John’s Post Office 14 years ago.

“Customers have been asking if we were affected but thankfully we avoided the worst of the situation,” he said.

“The whole thing seemed to bubble underneath the public consciousness for a long time, but this show has really blown it open and hopefully something will be done now.

“I think [former Post Office boss] Paula Vennells handing back her CBE before being told to hand it back tells you quite a lot.”

Worcester MP Robin Walker said he has spoken to “a lot” of Worcester residents who are keen to see justice done after watching the ITV drama.

"I have been contacted by a lot of constituents who are understandably concerned about the situation and I have spoken to colleagues about those concerns,” said Mr Walker.

"Overwhelmingly, people want justice for the sub-postmasters and they were appalled by what appears to be a huge miscarriage of justice.

"I've not been contacted by anyone directly affected who fell foul of the Horizon system but I would be delighted to be contacted and to take up any cases.

"I have been watching the programme myself and completely understand why people feel so strongly about it.

"Postmasters do an important job and play an important role in their communities.

"I also think the computer companies need to be looked at and if there is a paper trail leading back to them then we need to go back to them for compensation.

"It's very important that justice is not only done but is seen to be done."
