A Worcestershire based Leukaemia charity is inviting families to "light a candle in memory" of a lost loved one to mark World Cancer Day.

Charity Leukaemia Care, which is based in Blackpole, Worcester, encourages families to come together, to share stories of their loved ones, celebrate their lives, and remember them, while contributing funds for the charity's ongoing activities.

Any person who has experienced the loss of a dear one to leukaemia or another form of blood cancer, irrespective of the time that has lapsed since their passing, is welcome to participate in the event.

The event has been organised through Facebook, and upon sign up, participants will be sent a postcard to pen their heartfelt message to a cherished and missed loved one, along with their candle.

They also have the option to share the message on Facebook during the candlelight ceremony, scheduled for 8pm on Sunday, February 4.

The charity asks participants to raise a minimum amount of £50 through their fundraising activities to take part in the commemorative event.

Additionally, the charity extends its support via its 'Bereavement and Loss Support Group' via its Facebook page.

The online community comprises individuals who understand the unique challenges and pain associated with losing a loved one to leukaemia.

Funds raised through this event will be used by Leukaemia Care to continue delivering diverse forms of support, like its bereavement services, to anyone affected by a leukaemia diagnosis.

Claire Merritt, the charity's in memory and legacy support officer said: "It’s very important for us to come together with those affected by the loss of a loved one to leukaemia, or another blood cancer, not only on World Cancer Day but also all year round – which is why we’re always here to support everyone.

"We understand how important it is to provide care after someone passes and we have specialist groups and staff to do this.

"However, we cannot provide those services without the invaluable donations from all our fundraisers which allows us to continue providing services for all, throughout their leukaemia journey."
