Worcester News readers have been reacting to the news that Woolworths could potentially make a return to high streets across the UK.

Known for its pick 'n' mix sweets and affordable pricing, the brand closed its British outlets in 2009 due to the financial crisis.

However the brand survived in Germany, where it goes by the name Woolworth, by HH Holding.

Readers have been reminiscing about the store on Facebook.

Roman Heini, currently at the helm of HH Holding, views the UK as a target for international expansion.

This has led to speculation of a possible return of the popular store after a tweet from a user known as Mery mentioned the potential for Woolworths to return to the UK, 16 years post-bankruptcy.

However, Woolworth Germany could not confirm any significant plans but mentioned that Britain is 'on the radar' of Mr Heini.

The brand has not ruled out the possibility of a return.

Diana Stanley, said: "Loved Woolworths, it would be great if it came back to High Streets."

Other residents echoed this sentiment, with Sue Griffiths commenting: "Never missed a shop so much."

The Woolworths brand was born in the US, but has an extensive history in the UK having operated for a century in the country since the opening of its first store in Liverpool in 1909.

There were 807 British stores at the time of the high street favourite's closure, resulting in 27,000 people being left unemployed.

Former employee Suzanne Lyons commented: "Used to work at Guildhall in the early sixties and get my buttered roll from Woolies, it was only 4 pence".

Fellow former Woolworths worker Irene Mountford added: "I worked in Woolworths for a couple of years when I was a student. I loved it, as there were other students too. We had great fun."

Reader Annie Dunbar said: "Loved everything they sold, miss Woolworths a lot, it would be lovely to have Woolworths back in Worcester", with Diana Stanley concurring: "Loved Woolworths , it would be great if it came back to High Streets."

Jan Hill hopes for a resurgence of other beloved high street stores, writing: "We could do with lots of other stores coming back too… British Home Stores, C & A, Russell & Dorrell, Debenhams to name a few."
