A WELL-KNOWN Worcester pub could undergo a major refurbishment and get a new name, plans reveal.

The plans submitted by Star Pubs & Bars will see The Cricketers Arms transform into The Shakespeare - a pub that will pay homage to the new Scala Theatre when it is built.

Star Pubs & Bars said it wants to breathe new life into the derelict pub in Angel Street, and if plans submitted to Worcester City Council are given the green light, the refurb will begin in 2025.

A spokesperson at Star Pubs & Bars said: "We're keen to breathe new life into the Cricketers in Angel Street, Worcester, and as such, have submitted provisional plans for a refurbishment of this once loved pub, with any works not likely to go ahead until 2025, subject to the usual planning consent.

"We'll be able to share more details of our specific plans for the pub later this year."

The Grade II, three-storey building has remained empty since closing in 2020 due to Covid's impact on trade.

According to the planning application, the former watering hole will be painted white and green with a new illuminated sign and a vertical sign down the side of the pub.

Its hanging sign will have a portrait of William Shakespeare.

The general layout and character of The Cricketers Arms will not be affected by the plans and the interior work is set to ensure the pub is safe to trade again after its extensive closure.

The kitchen is set to move into the pub, and the existing accommodation will be refurbished.

Lighting and televisions are set to be installed along with new fire doors, timber and vinyl flooring and a  new carpet.

The existing accommodation on the first floor is proposed to become a domestic space to allow a manager to live on-site.

The consultation period will end on Wednesday, February 7 and can be found quoting the application number 24/00020/LB on Worcester City Council.
