A FLOOD alert has been issued in Worcester following the heavy rainfall.

Barbourne Brook has been issued with a flood alert this morning (Thursday, February 9) by the Environment Agency which warns that flooding is now possible there.

The warning has been issued after the heavy rain which hit the county this morning.

The agency's warning says: "River levels are rising at the Perdiswell river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, the flooding of roads and farmland is possible.

"We expect flooding to affect low-lying land and roads adjacent to Barbourne Brook from the M5 to Barbourne, including Perdiswell and Blackpole Industrial Estate.

"We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days.

"Additional rainfall is forecast over the next 48 hours which is expected to keep levels elevated in this location.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."

The alert was issued at 9.12am and is currently the only warning for the county.

The alert follows heavy rain this morning - with more rain forecast in the coming days.

An alert is less serious than a warning, which means flood is expected in an area and people should prepare.
