A charity supporting homeless care leavers is celebrating a fundraising success in collaboration with a Worcestershire property developer.

The funds, raised by Droitwich Spa-based the Rees Foundation, with the help of Barberry Group Ltd, will enable the charity to assist leavers with their accommodation and tenancy management, as well as helping them find employment.

The Barberry Group selected the foundation as its 'chosen charity' for the year in 2023, keen to support adults who experienced childhood trauma and often leave care with little or no assistance.

Jan Rees OBE, who founded the foundation in 2013, a former foster carer herself, envisioned a support network for individuals transitioning out of care.

The foundation owns properties in Kidderminster, Bromsgrove and Redditch which care leavers can apply to live in as part of the charity's housing and support project.

One tenant under the foundation’s support said: "I’ve been with Rees for over two years, before this I was in hostels and prison.

"Rees gave me the chance for a new start with the flat and my own tenancy.

"Before this I’d always been in the wrong place with the wrong crowd."

He added: "I feel like my life is more stable now and that I make better choices.

"For the first time in a long time I am in a relationship and things are good."

Barberry, an award-winning property developer, held multiple fundraising events in 2023 to commemorate its 40th anniversary.

Executive chairman, Jon Bellfield said: "I am delighted the money raised this year will present many more opportunities for care leavers."

"The work the Rees Foundation do is vital to improve the lives of those who have experienced trauma throughout their lives and have no one to turn to.

"To know the money Barberry has raised will help more people is fantastic."
