The city will mark Chinese New Year with a day of creative activities and star-studded music performers.

On Sunday (February 18), Worcester will celebrate the Year of the Dragon with a free event for people of all ages hosted by the Worcester Chinese Association and educational charity Engage with China.

Taking place from 11am until 4pm at the Museum of Royal Worcester and Royal Porcelain Works, the day promises a lineup of creative activities and music performances inspired by Chinese culture.

Attendees will also have the chance to participate in a traditional tea ceremony, hosted by the Museum's staff team.

Frankie Tsang, chair of Worcestershire Chinese Association, said: "We aim to bring Chinese culture alive and to bridge understanding with our local communities.

"For the first time, the traditional Dragon Dance will take place in Severn Street, close to the Cathedral at 12.30pm."

Visitors can also expect a variety of family-friendly arts and crafts led by students from Christopher Whitehead Language College.

The activities will draw from Chinese New Year traditions, including calligraphy, paper cutting dragons, and the popular chopstick challenge.

Fortune Cookie prizes, Lucky Red Envelopes, and a special appearance by Pom Pom the Giant Panda are also slated for the day.

H-J Colston-Inge, director of Engage with China said: "We are a proud partner of this annual free cultural event.

"A special treat for this year is a Chinese music performance by renowned soprano Chen Wang and Guo Yue on flute, who are on their UK tour."

Worcester News: Attendees can take part in a traditional tea ceremony

The Museum's Paint-Your-Own-Pottery studio will give art enthusiasts the chance to paint Year of the Dragon ceramic shapes, with former Royal Worcester painter, Jim Skerrett, showing visitors how to paint tiles inspired by blue and white porcelain.

In addition, the day will witness a martial arts display from Worcester's Kui De Tang Kung Fu school at 2pm, according to General Manager at Royal Porcelain Works, Kathy Leather.

Residents and nearby businesses have been informed that Severn Street is set to close temporarily during the Dragon Dance.
