The Corn Exchange does not need “fundamentally changing” to become a theatre cafe, councillors have heard.

Architect Helen Grassly, who is leading the Scala project, addressed the city council’s planning committee on Thursday (March 21).

She said: “The Corn Exchange, we’re stabilising, we’re putting in better quality light fittings - LED, we’re improving the quality of the toilets and so on but we’re not fundamentally changing the space.

“It will be great as a bar/cafe space and perhaps some pop-up music.”

Bringing the building’s mezzanine floor back into use is something that could happen in the future but isn’t part of the initial plans for the building for cost reasons.
