THE reason for a Worcestershire pub's unexpected flooding has been revealed.

The Swan Hotel pub in Upton-Upon-Severn was submerged in five to six inches of water this morning (Saturday) due to a pump failure outside the Boat House Restaurant.

Staff were met with the site of huge streams of water around where the pub is located next to the River Severn at around 6:37am.

While Severn Trent were contacted by the pub on Friday evening to warn that the issue could develop, the firm made no response.

Luke Sturman, landlord at The Swan Hotel, said due to a "catalogue of errors" by Severn Trent, the pub would not be open to customers for the foreseeable future.

Although Severn Trent did eventually turn up, they were unable to resolve the problem as they had the incorrect equipment.

Now, however, the reason as to why the flooding developed in the first place has been revealed.

Cllr Martin Allen, of Worcestershire County Council, who was at the scene this morning (Saturday), confirmed the pump located outside the Boat House had been cut.

He said: "So, we found out why the pump outside the Boat House didn’t work, the cable was cut!"

While the clear up operation has begun, no timeframe has been given as to when the pub will reopen.

Mr Sturman said the pub would lose a "substantial sum" due to its temporary closure having been expecting to welcome a significant amount of customers over the Easter weekend.
