A CARING four-year-old will don his running shoes to raise money for the hospital that saved his baby sister.

Joey Wright wanted to support Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH), where the staff looked after his whole family, and will tackle the Mini Great Birmingham Run next month.

His sister Sophia Wright needed surgery when diagnosed with heart condition pulmonary stenosis at just 24 hours old and she will need BCH’s support through her childhood.

Sophia is now aged six months and Joey’s efforts have already smashed the target by raising more than £1,300.

Their mother Megan Whitworth, of Ombersley, said: “In May my four-year-old son will be taking part in the Mini Great Birmingham Run on behalf of Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“The reason behind this is that at nine days old his sister was transferred from Worcester Neonatal (Unit) to BCH where she had her first cardiac surgery.

"His sister will remain under BCH for her childhood and Joey asked what he could do to raise pennies for the hospital that helped to fix his sister.”

Sytchampton Endowed Primary School pupil Joey will tackle the challenge on Sunday, May 5.

Megan added: “The run is 1.5 kilometres and Joey’s really looking forward to it.

“He’s using Ombersley Memorial Park to train ready for it.”

Pulmonary stenosis means the pulmonary valve that controls blood flow in the heart is too small, narrow or stiff.

BCH offers expert care to more than 90,000 children and young people from across the country every year.
