A Worcestershire GP has raised almost £3,000 after completing a 300km cycle.

Urgent Care GP Susanna Hocking completed a three-day, solo challenge to raise awareness for sepsis and fundraise for the UK Sepsis Trust.

Ms Hocking overcame the challenges of high winds and delayed ferries during her journey through the Highlands.

Nevertheless, she has expressed gratitude for the "tremendous support" provided throughout her challenge, exceeding her target to raise more than £2,800.

The funds will go towards the UK Sepsis Trust, a charity committed to confronting a condition responsible for nearly 48,000 deaths annually.

For the challenge, Ms Hocking cycled across the Hebridean Way from the Island of Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis.

Ms Hocking is currently the medical lead at Practice Plus Group’s Integrated Urgent Care in Gloucestershire.

Ms Hocking said: "It was a tough ride but the thought of everyone’s enormous support and generous donations kept me going.

"As a doctor, I am passionate about raising awareness of this potentially life-threatening condition.

"I believe with early detection and ensuring the patient is in the best place for the most appropriate care, sepsis can be treated effectively and lives can be saved."

She added that knowing the signs of sepsis is challenging as the symptoms often resemble a flu-like illness.

Therefore, Ms Hocking emphasises urgent care and speedy treatment are vital.

Reflecting on the journey, Ms Hocking said: "The highlight of the trip was the beautiful scenery and rugged roads of the Highlands.

"Everyone I met was friendly and welcoming, there is a real feeling of community spirit across the islands, and I was always greeted with a wave and a smile.

"As much as being alone was difficult at times, it was also an opportunity to focus my mind and clear my head."

She highlighted how proud she was able to "put my body and mind to the test and was able to raise awareness of such an important cause at the same time."

With contributions from friends and family, and a committed match from her employer Practice Plus Group, she managed to smash her initial £1,000 target.
