AN EYECATCHING artwork featuring a character from Super Mario Bros and created by an artist during a paint festival has vanished.

Art lovers had noticed the mosaic artwork created by UK street artist Angus during Worcester Paint Festival had disappeared from the College Street entrance to the NCP.

The popular piece was created with mosaic tiles and featured Luigi with a Poltergust G-00 vacuuming up ghosts.

However, all that remains of the piece are the outlines of the characters after they were removed from the walls.

It is one of a number of murals created around Worcester as part of the annual Worcester Paint Festival.

Now, the festival's director revealed the artwork was taken down by the wall's owners as there will be some new artwork in its place.

Kate Cox, director of Worcester Paint Festival, said "We were not aware that the piece by prominent Bristol artist 'Angus' had been removed.

"It's a couple of years old now and I guess that magnifies the beauty and transient nature of street art, compared to other art forms."

Street artist Angus is best known for his quirky tiles and has previously had work unveiled in Worcester.

His work has also been featured all over the world and the Luigi mural was installed back in 2022 as part of the festival.

"He has put up little pieces that are like a modern take on graffiti," said Mrs Cox.

"His work is known for being quite comical, cheeky and playful."

As to what will replace the artwork in the NCP car park, this will have nothing to do with the paint festival Mrs Cox confirmed.

"We bring something different to the city, it's a level of different artwork," she said.

"We work with professional street artists and people from all over the world."

The Worcester Paint Festival is due to return to the city later this year but there will be a twist for the 2024 edition.

Mrs Cox said: "We are returning in September for a one-day event.

"We are changing how we do things this year. There will still be community projects in the year but we will have a live painting on September 21.

"People can keep an eye on our website for more details and we are looking for sponsors for the event to help deliver murals."
