A community pantry has been given the green light for funding to continue and extend its work in the area.

The Tudor Way Family Hub in Dines Green, run by Action for Children, successfully applied to the Community Chest, a fund set up by Platform Housing Group.

The chest accepts applications from community charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations whose projects benefit Platform customers.

The new source of funding is said to cover the cost of food delivery from the Birmingham depot to the Family Hub, provided by national charity Fareshare, over the next 12 months.

Although the food provided by the charity, which works to combat hunger and food waste in the UK, is free, the cost of transport to Dines Green has to be covered.

Community health connector at Action for Children, Ileana Monagham, said: "We are so grateful to Platform Housing Group for these much needed funds.

"The Pantry has a big impact on our families; we are able to support anywhere between 20 and 30 families with fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products, helping them to provide a real nutritional option at meal times.

"The food we receive goes to families with children who are in desperate need of food.

"Without our help many families would struggle feeding their children; so many rely on the Pantry."

Marion Duffy, chief operations officer at Platform, said: "This is such an important and worthwhile cause and we are humbled to be able to help fund the cost of the deliveries.

"Unfortunately, now more than ever, families are struggling financially and it is projects like this that can offer a real lifeline to those who need it most."
