ASPARAGUS season has officially started in The Vale of Evesham, kicking off at a village pub.

The Fleece Inn, in Bretforton, kicked off the festivities on April 23, with Morris men and Gus the asparagus man making an appearance.

Nigel Smith, landlord of The Fleece Inn, said: "Asparagus season starts on St George's Day and lasts until June 21.

"We normally give one hundred asparagus to a worthy cause.

"This year we delivered it to The National Star school in Cheltenham.

"It was very moving to see the young people and the trials that they have to go through as well as the immense work and love that is provided to give them the best chances in life."

A hundred of asparagus is the longest and straightest pieces, traditionally tied with willow twine.

Mr Smith added: "We started at 9.30am by singing the asparagus song and singing the asparagus oath and it ran almost like clockwork.

"It  was really good, lots of people came, children from Bretforton Village school dropped by and wore asparagus crowns.

"The kids loved it and had a ball of a time.

"I always look forward to asparagus season, it's a wake-up call for the summer, it's such a fantastic vegetable, not only in the pub, but I eat plenty of the stuff myself."

Evesham Journal:

Following the singing and dancing at the pub, the asparagus was driven to Broadway by a classic vintage car parade, before the vegetable took The Asparagus Express (a train), to Cheltenham.

The Asparagus Express consisted of ten cars, with entertainment provided.

With around 50 people in each car and each car being completely full, according to Mr Smith, 400-500 people must have been aboard the train.

Mr Smith added: "The next event of the season will be an asparagus auction, held here at The Fleece Inn in the evening on the last Sunday in May.

"We will be raising money for the Bretforton Silver Band, the last one remaining in Worcestershire.

"Last year we must have had over 1,000 people attend the auction and we expect to raise around £2,000 this time around."
