Thunderstorms and heavy showers are set to hit the region this afternoon (Sunday), with some intense downpours possible in a few places.

Large hail, frequent lightning strikes and possibly strong wind gusts will be additional localised hazards.

The Met Office has warned that it could lead to some disruption in places, especially to travel.

What to Expect

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life, particularly in places such as road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

What should you do?

Advice as to what you should do in the event of a weather warning is provided by the Met Office.

Residents are advised to prepare to protect your property and people from injury and check to ensure moveable objects or temporary structures are well secured.

Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

Ensure you are prepared should a power cut occur - consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car).

The Met Office stresses you should not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning and If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground.

Stay up to date with weather forecasts in your area, as weather warning can change quickly once one is issued.
