A GROUP set up for former students of a city school will be holding a reunion this weekend.

The Facebook page for St Stephen’s School, off Ombersley Road in Worcester, was created by Dawn Irlam after she was unable to find much information online.

Since then, the group has grown and they are now holding a reunion from 1pm onwards at Gheluvelt Park on Saturday, June 8.

Dawn said: “There are members of the Facebook group who sadly live too far away or abroad or have holidays booked but never the less we are still going ahead on Saturday.

“Attendees will be bringing their own picnics and we all hope the British weather will be kind to us.”

Dawn, whose maiden name is Clarke, is also hoping to reach out to those who attended the school but may have not joined the Facebook group.

She has been contacted by former pupils of all ages and from distant locations such as Australia and Canada.

Her private group now boasts more than 320 members.

Dawn left the school for Worcester Girls’ Grammar in around 1963-64 after passing her 11-plus exam.

The junior school, which was on the Ombersley Road side of St Stephen’s Church off St Stephen’s Street, was demolished in the 1970s.

In October 1974 the then-Worcester Evening News reported that children were set to transfer to nearby Northwick Manor School, Northwick Road, with St Stephen’s closing after 110 years.

The area where it stood is now covered by retirement housing complex Noele Court which was built in 1979 and features 38 flats managed by Sanctuary Housing.
