YOUNGSTERS from two Worcester schools delivered a poignant poem to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Students from Tudor Grange Primary Academy and Tudor Grange Academy marked the Normandy landing anniversary by performing 'The D-Day Poem' in Cathedral Square.

There were 20 performers and a choir at the poignant event, as well as a short talk by Professor Carl Chinn.

The poem reading was turned into a dramatic event, with the children in costume, moving around the space and among the audience and passers-by.

The D-Day poem was written by Roy Palmer, a Chelsea Pensioner, and it was read by schools across the country at 11am.

This reading formed part of ‘Spitfire over the Midlands,’ a two-year project in which the Midland Actors Theatre worked with youngsters from different schools looking at the impact the Spitfire had on so many people.

As part of the project, Tudor Grange made a short film, showcasing some of the work the students have been doing.

It will be shown on the big screen in Cathedral Square on Saturday, June 8, as part of the city’s D-Day anniversary celebrations.

Rachel Hughes, principal of Tudor Grange Primary Academy Perdiswell, said: “We’re so proud of the children of the primary school and Tudor Grange Worcester - of what they’ve done to remember something so far away from their living memory but so real for us today.

“They’ve done the schools proud.”
