Royal Mint: Rare King Charles 50p selling for £1,000 on eBay

Despite the new coins coming into circulation in 2023, coin collectors and sellers have taken to eBay and Facebook Marketplace to try and jump on the excitement quickly before it fades.

A quick glance at eBay will show that 50p coins are selling for various high prices in Swindon such as £200 and £500 (not including postage).

But one Swindon seller really hoping to get their money's worth has listed a coin as available to 'buy now' for a whopping £950.

The 'memorial 50p' coin is the first variation of coin with Charles' portrait on to be released and is described as "a highly sought-after 50p coin featuring King Charles III, minted in 2022 and with a low mintage."

"It is a valuable addition to any coin collection," the seller assures.

"The coin bears the denomination of 50p and is made of 0.999 fineness, minted in Great Britain in the era of Charles III (2022-now). This particular coin is unmodified and has not been tampered with in any way."

The latest Charles coins, celebrating Charles's coronation, were first received by the Post Office and UK bank branches in August 2023.

This is the second 50p to enter circulation bearing His Majesty’s official coin portrait.

The Memorial 50p, which was Charles' first official coin, entered circulation in December 2022 and marked the transition of monarchs from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III.

But the new coronation design, created by Royal Mint Designer Natasha Jenkins, featured the iconic Westminster Abbey where King Charles was coronated, as well as his official cypher on the 'tails' side.

The 'heads' side shows his official portrait which was unveiled in September 2022.

Experts at changechecker.org estimate that 4.9 million 50ps bearing the portrait of King Charles III are currently in circulation.
