The Worcestershire regiment's delayed landing in Normandy over a fortnight after D-Day will be commemorated in Gheluvelt Park.

A commemoration service will be held at the Worcestershire Regimental Stone in Worcester on Saturday, June 22, marking the 80th anniversary of their landing in 1944.

The event will be held by the Worcester Branch of the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association (W.F.R.A.), in partnership with other organisations and Worcester City Council.

The regiment suffered significant delays and logistical challenges during the initial stages of the operation due to stormy weather, finally arriving in Normandy on June 22.

The Vice Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff are expected to attend the ceremony at 10.30am, lasting for around an hour.

The ceremony will feature the Standards being dipped in salute to the Lord Lieutenant.

Afterwards, a welcome and address will be presented by Lt Col (Retd.) Mark Jackson OBE, chair of trustees of the Mercian Regiment Worcestershire and president of Worcester Branch W.F.R.A.

This will give attendees insight into the lead up to the regiment's landing, the battles through Normandy as part of the 43rd Wessex Division, and its journey across Northern Europe.

The religious component of the ceremony will be conducted by Reverend Lindsey Coulthard of St Stephens, with a reading by a member of Worcester Branch W.F.R.A.

The public is invited to be a part of the occasion, which is a good opportunity to acknowledge the history and the valiant efforts of the servicemen during World War II.
