A Worcester college has partnered up with a nursing college to train the future healthcare workforce.

Heart of Worcestershire College, (HoW College) is collaborating with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) to give the people of Redditch access to the Prince of Wales Nursing Cadet Scheme.

The initiative, supported by HRH Prince of Wales, was founded in 2019 to give more opportunities to young people in socially deprived areas.

It aims to broaden participation in healthcare professions and present new career routes in nursing and other Allied Health Professions (AHPs).

The programme integrates theoretical classroom-based education with modules in basic life support, infection control, dementia care and a practical study.

This involves a 20-hour clinical observation work experience placement with a nearby healthcare provider, which aims to give cadets an understanding of the broad range of career possibilities in nursing and AHPs.

Jack Parry, project coordinator for the RCN, said: "We’re delighted to be launching in Redditch in partnership with HoW College and our NHS colleagues.

"The scheme provides a fantastic opportunity for cadets to explore a career in nursing and attend a 20-hour work experience within the NHS.

"Our partnership also provides an opportunity for cadets to apply for a Health Care Support Worker apprenticeship with Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust."

Yvonne Thomas, manager for health and social care at the college’s Redditch campus, said: "This partnership will bring a real boon and advantage to our learners across Redditch and Bromsgrove, and having the RCN attached really brings a seal of approval to the project."

On completing the course, students will receive a report which can aid in future interviews for study or jobs.

Also, students become members of the RCN alumni network, gaining access to local and international events, talks, and future employment opportunities.

The Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, set to host the first batch of cadets at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, welcomes the collaboration.

Chief nursing officer, Sarah Shingler, said: "We are delighted to welcome our first 20 RCN Prince of Wales Nursing Cadets.

"We hope this initiative will inspire young people to pursue careers in the NHS and explore the opportunities our Trust offers."
