A TOWN covers band are continuing to light up the county music scene.

Droitwich’s Neon Pulse, whose home is the Riflemans Arms in Station Street where they rehearse, were born in the summer of 2020 during Covid.

The three-piece live group use bespoke sequencing and perform synth-based classics from the 1980s and 90s.

Members Pete Sankey, Vanessa Tuzzio and Nik Owen Jones all met at a karaoke night in 2019.

Owen Jones thought the three of them would be a great fit for an 1980s synth pop trio and Neon Pulse were eventually formed.

Sankey performed in theatre shows while Tuzzio has been singing from an early age.

Owen Jones has played keyboards since the age of 14 and been in many bands and theatre productions as well as festivals across Europe.

After agreeing the first set of songs Owen Jones started to programme the backing tracks from scratch using vintage analogue and digital synthesisers plus guitar and drum machines.

The original first draft of songs were circulated on a file-sharing site and fine-tuning ensued.

The first band meet was in Owen Jones’ back garden during the Covid restriction lifting with the songs reviewed and further selections made.

Once restrictions lifted rehearsals started in earnest and after changes the set list started to take shape.

The Riflemans landlady Theresa Price offered the band their first gig in December 2021.

Owen Jones concentrated on the production while Sankey and Tuzzio worked on vocals and harmonies in the lead-up.

The lighting programming was completed by Owen Jones and his son Cameron Jones, the band’s tech with sound engineering and lights as well as a DJ.

The first gig was packed to the rafters with a video feed outside for the overspill and the night went according to plan.

Now Neon Pulse continue to grow with changes in the set list and the introduction of medleys and dance songs from the early 1990s.

Regular gigs carry on at the Riflemans and in Worcester at Alma Tavern, in Kidderminster and at festivals.
