AN injured jockey hurt in a horror fall at the city's racecourse is talking as a horse trainer from her team reveals she is making good progress.

Lauren Keen-Hawkins fell from her horse at Worcester Racecourse but is said by horse trainer Kim Bailey to be 'talking' and making good progress in an update released today (Monday) on his blog.

The 22-year-old suffered a head injury during a fall at Pitchcroft on Sunday, September 1 and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

However, she is now out of intensive care and has been described as 'looking remarkably well' by Mr Bailey who visited her in hospital.

The young jockey is a key member of trainer Kim Bailey’s team and was partnering the Andoversford handler’s Faerie Cutlass when they came down three flights from the finish in the concluding handicap hurdle.

Mr Bailey, writing in his blog, said: "On arrival I found Lauren asleep in her chair with her parents Philip and Karen and boyfriend Will all sitting by her bed chatting to her.

"Lauren looks remarkably well, and she had been talking in fits and starts, and on Friday she was shown my web site and named all the horses she saw on it.

"She was obviously very tired when I arrived and remained asleep. I was going to suggest doing the David Bass bit and play her some music, but unlike DB’s mine would have been very different and probably unsuitable as she would have gone into even deeper sleep. I am sure she heard my voice hence, she remained asleep.

"Joking aside there really is improvement, and time is the healer and as I have mentioned before Philip and Karen are immensely grateful for all that the IJF has done for them and for keeping them informed.

"Hospitals are certainly not my favourite places, and I have seen a few recently but the QEH is huge and spotless and once you know where you are going it works well."

She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by ambulance following the fall and admitted to critical care, but has now been moved onto a ward.

Keen-Hawkins had previously ridden Faerie Cutlass to finish second at Worcester in July, while she enjoyed a winner at Cheltenham aboard Dandy Dan at the track’s hunter chase night in April 2022.

The Midlands Air Ambulance and other ambulances converged on Pitchcroft shortly before 5.30pm on Sunday, September 1 in response to the incident.
