A BUSY city road near Worcester Shrub Hill railway station has re-opened ahead of schedule after an emergency closure.

The Newtown Road tunnel under the railway bridge in Worcester closed for repairs on Monday, September 2, forcing Worcestershire County Council to close the road after safety fears.

The tunnel under the bridge was shut immediately while the pedestrian footway has been closed since Tuesday, September 3 with diversions in place.

The work was initially expected to take two weeks and was expected to be open again by tomorrow (Saturday, September 14).

However, Worcestershire County Council has revealed Newtown Road is now open ahead of schedule with Network Rail completing repairs. 

According to the Worcestershire Roadworks website, the initial closure was put in place for emergency works required to attend to the rotten timber section of the bridge.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesperson said: "Newtown Road, Worcester, is now fully open ahead of schedule following completion of repairs by Network Rail."
