‘OUTDATED’ phone boxes are set to be removed from the city centre.

BT wants to replace some of its old phone boxes with new street hubs - illuminated digital screens offering free wifi and USB charging.

Plans submitted to Worcester City Council show the telecoms giant is planning to get rid of two phone boxes in Broad Street, two in Corn Market and one in The Shambles.

These would be replaced by two street hubs - one in The Shambles and one outside the Premier Inn in New Road, near the entrance to the cricket ground.

BT said its three-metre tall street hubs feature “a fully accessible tablet interface and digital HD display screens on two sides”.

They also offer free wifi and free phone calls, and are capable of housing air quality and traffic sensors.

BT said they will be monitored 24/7, inspected weekly and cleaned at least every fortnight.

“The Street Hub unit will be funded through the display of advertising in conjunction with other council and community content, via sponsorship from companies who will utilise the digital HD display screens on both sides of the unit,” it says.

“Street Hubs will see with it the removal of existing, outdated and worn-down BT payphones, at no extra cost to the council.

“The removal of these phone boxes will assist in the decluttering of footpaths in the wider area and enhance the broader area’s visual amenity.”

Plans for the two proposed street hubs have been submitted as separate planning applications.

City councillor Adam Scott said of The Shambles plan: “I welcome this proposal as a new public facility for the city centre.

“Its sleek looks and modern telecoms facilities will be an asset. The Shambles is an appropriate location and this will be in keeping with the street and adjacent buildings.”

Worcestershire highways officers raised concerns over the New Road street hub, saying in the proposed location it would block part of the footpath, which is a designated pedestrian and cycle route.

They said: “The introduction of a Street Hub at this location would result in a tangible reduction in the usable footway space, thereby impeding pedestrian and cyclist movement which compromises safe and suitable access for all users, the highway safety implications of which are unacceptable.”
