A WORCESTERSHIRE garden centre is to create a new entrance specially for its toy department.

Webbs Garden Centre in Wychbold is replacing its pets section with its toys and games department as part of an internal re-organisation of the store.

The changes will include the creation of a new ‘Enchanted Toys’ entrance, which will sit between the main doors and the Lakeland store entrance.

Webbs closed its aquatics, reptiles and small animals department in July but at the time remained tight-lipped about what would replace the area at the front of the store.

Plans for the new entrance have been approved by Wychavon District Council.

Setting out the plans, consultancy RCA Regeneration said: “Webbs has several entrance points to the store, with an atrium-style lobby at the centre, projecting forward from the building line.

“The front elevation also contains a separate entrance to the adjoining Lakeland premises and exit from the till area. There is also a further entrance to the Cotswold Outdoor shop.

“The main garden centre is linked to Lakeland by two sets of internal staircases.

“Between the two is a reasonably large area which has, for some time, contained the pets and aquatics offering.

“However, by virtue of its position on a lower level relative to the main garden centre shop floor and above Lakeland, footfall in this area is comparatively low.”

The new entrance, with automatic sliding doors, and store reconfiguration is intended to improve footfall in this part of the store.

RCA says pet retailing “will remain at the store in another form”.

It also says disabled access to the building would “undoubtedly be improved through the proposal”.

District planners said: “The proposed alterations are modest in scale and intended to support a well-established local business.

“The site is already in long-standing retail use and contributes to local employment.”

They say the plans represent “a well-considered and proportionate upgrade” to the garden centre and will “improve the appearance and accessibility of the frontage without causing harm to visual amenity or the wider streetscape”.
