Plan to turn Pear Tree Inn & Country Hotel into SEND school

The Pear Tree Inn & Country Hotel in Smite could be turned into a school after plans to change it's use that were withdrawn, were resubmitted.

Plans to change the pub and hotel into a school had been withdrawn in November due 'to personal circumstances', however fresh plans have now been submitted by the new owner, Mr Rajan Gill.

The planning application said: "This application has been prepared as a re - submission of planning application reference W/25/01553/FUL, which was withdrawn on 19 November 2025 due to personal circumstances relating to the previous owner. It is understood that the application was recommended for approval prior to its withdrawal. The site is now under new ownership and, as a result, an identical application has been submitted for consideration.

"Full planning permission is sought for the change of use of the existing public house and hotel to a specialist SEND school. The school will cater for pupils with a range of needs, including neurodivergence, speech and communication difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs and mild to moderate learning difficulties."

The building will undergo a 'comprehensive internal reconfiguration' to create a 'purpose-built learning environment'. There will be eight teaching rooms on the ground floor, each serving up to six students. Additionally plans show a library, science room, textiles room, food technology room, and a multi-functional community space that 'could support activities such as physical education, drama, and group sessions'.

The plans add: "The first floor will provide a further seven base rooms designed for small group teaching together with specialist accommodation including an art room and a media suite. Exam rooms and additional staff offices and workspaces will also be provided at first floor level to support the day - to- day operation of the school".
