A landmark women’s county cricket match will be held at a village club.

Worcestershire Rapids Women will take on Gloucestershire Women in a Metro Bank Women’s One Day Cup fixture at Martley Cricket Club on Sunday, September 6.

It will be the first time a Worcestershire CCC league match has been held at the village ground.

Tom Vale, chairman of Martley Cricket Club, said: "This is a landmark moment for Martley.

"Having hosted Worcestershire players' benefit and testimonial matches with hundreds in attendance, and also being a hub for some of the county’s age-group matches, this is more wonderful recognition for us as a club.

"It is almost certainly the most prestigious game ever played in the village.

"The event will provide a fantastic opportunity for the local community to see high-quality women’s cricket up close, and we are hoping to get plenty of youngsters involved on the day."

Martley have two women’s sides competing in soft ball cricket and are hoping to set up a hardball team in the near future, with several girls already in the Worcestershire pathway teams.

Vale added: “We’re making great strides as a club with regards women’s cricket and we’re committed to supporting the growth of the women’s game.

"Hosting this fixture is a real endorsement of the work being done by our amazing volunteers across the club, and we’re looking forward to welcoming players, supporters and visitors for what promises to be a brilliant day of cricket.”

The match is free for spectators with food vans, an ice cream van and a children’s play park available on site.

The club’s Tap & Run bar will be open throughout the day.

The match is set to start at 10.30am.
