MOTORISTS are being reminded to take extra care when encountering horses on the roads after a recent incident in West Mercia left a rider with minor injuries.

West Mercia Police are reminding drivers that horses can be easily startled, and fast-moving vehicles, loud noises, or passing too closely can cause them to react unpredictably.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Horse riders have just as much right to use the road as any other road user.

"A few moments of patience and consideration can help prevent injuries and keep our roads safe for everyone."

What to do if you are passing a horse while driving?

West Mercia Police have shared what to do when passing a horse.

Drivers should slow down when they approach a horse and give plenty of space when overtaking.

West Mercia Police advised drivers to be patient, avoid sounding the horn or revving the engine, and follow any signals from the rider.
